Ear Candling (also called "Ear Coning") is an ancient healing method originating in Egypt still in use today at wellness centers. It's theory is based upon creating a vacuum to naturally remove debris from the ear without "flushing" or forcing liquid through the ear canal.
Ear candling requires the use of ear candles. Ear candles are made of cotton or linen that's wound into a cone shape, soaked in wax, and then allowed to harden.
This hollow candle is inserted through a hole in a plate specially designed to collect wax, and placed into the external ear canal. The candle is lit at the opposite end.
The burning creates a low-level vacuum that draws ear wax and other debris out of the ear and into the hollow candle. After the procedure, a dark, waxy substance is usually left in the stub of the candle. We've even pulled bugs out of peoples' ears this way. Scary, but true!
As the candle burns,. the the therapist will also massage and drain the lymph area (side of the face and neck) to help get the sinuses functioning and things moving properly again. Of course, draining the lymph area can occasionally make one groggy, after all, it is flushing existing toxins out of the area, but the good news is that it will help the overall health of the body by draining this area.
After ear candling, facial and sinus pressures are generally relieved. The entire process takes about 15-20 minutes per ear. All staff at A Better Balanced Body are able to perform ear candling. It is a particular favorite with local surfers who often get water lodged deep into the ear. They find it the most efficient and cost-effective method for helping with trapped water.
